International MSc in Engineering
Location: Huangdao Campus, QingdaoSpecialisation/Program 1: Water Pollution Prevention and Smart Water Management
This program focuses on wastewater treatment and resource recovery, integrating fundamental theories and innovative technologies to address modern water challenges. Our work spans advanced treatment processes, intelligent system solutions, and sustainable management of regional water resources. Key research themes include:
- Advanced Nutrient Removal: Innovative methods for nitrogen and phosphorus removal from municipal wastewater.
- Intelligent Water Resource Management: Smart technologies for optimizing regional water systems.
- Industrial Wastewater & Resource Recovery: Reuse of industrial wastewater and recovery of valuable salts.
- Energy & Sludge Management: Energy recovery from wastewater sludge and sustainable biosolid handling.
- Urban Water Infrastructure: Optimization and leakage detection in water supply and drainage networks.
- Artificial Ecosystem Safety: Assessment technologies for engineered and constructed ecological systems.
- Energy Efficiency in Wastewater Treatment: Technologies for reducing energy consumption in municipal treatment plants.
The program aims to create smarter, more sustainable water cycles through technology integration, system optimization, and resource-conscious engineering.
Specialisation/Program 2: Smart Environmental Protection Technologies and Applications
Guided by the strategic need for intelligence and big data in environmental governance, this program focuses on developing and applying cutting-edge AI-driven technologies. We integrate machine learning, big data analytics, and the Internet of Things to build intelligent environmental management systems that enable precise pollution prevention, ecological protection, and efficient resource use. Our distinctive strengths include:
- Environmental Geographic Information Systems (GIS): Spatial intelligence for environmental planning and monitoring.
- Intelligent Environmental Monitoring: Real-time sensing, data acquisition, and pollution tracking.
- Smart Data Analysis & Processing: AI-powered environmental data mining, modeling, and decision support.

Academic Background
Applicants must hold a completed 3 or 4-year Bachelor’s degree in Engineering from an accredited university. The official degree certificate must be available by 20 April 2026.

Language Proficiency
Applicants must demonstrate proficiency in English.
- English: IELTS (6.5) or TOEFL (90). QUT can arrange an online English test if official certificates are not available.
- Chinese: Students must pass HSK Level 3 before degree conferral.
Technical Skills
Applicants must be computer literate and capable of working with digital tools, academic software, and research-related technologies used throughout the MSc program.
🎓 Full Tuition Waiver: Annual tuition fee of 30,000 RMB (≈ 4,300 USD) is fully covered.
💸 Monthly Stipend: Approximately 1,000 RMB (≈ 150 USD) per month, disbursed after each semester.
🏠 Free Accommodation: On-campus dormitories with twin-sharing rooms and attached shower/WC.
🍽️ Subsidized Meals: Affordable university canteens with estimated monthly cost of 1,000–2,000 RMB (150–300 USD).

Note on Visa
Admitted students must apply for a Chinese visa at their home country’s embassy. The visa application fee ranges from 50–100 USD.
The visa will initially be valid for three months and will be extended to one year upon arrival in China. The annual extension fee is approximately 115 USD.
Visa documentation requires proof of access to approximately 30,000 RMB (≈ 4,300 USD) in a bank account, as per Chinese government regulations.
